Obtaining a passport for minors is somewhat more complicated than getting one for an adult. There is additional proof and documentation required and extra care must be taken to get all the items in order and completed correctly before a passport application will be approved and passport issued.

Proof of the infant’s citizenship is required. This can be done with a certified birth certificate, naturalization certificate or citizenship certificate. You must prove that the infant is your child, either through a birth certificate listing the names of both parents or a court order that shows adoption of the child. If there is a question of custody, you will need court documents showing that you have sole custody.
Both parents must be able to provide acceptable identification from a list of allowable documents or identification form. Identification documents for the parents could include a military ID card, a driver’s license or a pasports. Other ID might be another type of government identification document.
The forms submitted by the parents have to follow a specific format and size. You can’t send copies that are smaller than actual size. Copies have to be presented on 8/5″ by 11″ white paper. Two-sided documents must have copies of each side. Both parents must provide documentation and both must sign.
Unless only one parent has official custody of the infant, both must sign the application for your child’s passport. The easiest way to accomplish this is for both parents to meet the appointment with the passport agent. Be sure you have identified alternative documentation and signature requirements before applying for the passport.
